Upcoming Events

J-Kai is JAFA's monthly social event that has been running since 1998. It provides an opportunity for Japanese and Australians with an interest in Japan to meet in a relaxed atmosphere. You don't have to be a JAFA member or speak any Japanese, just come along! Anyone can join and it's free.

Parafield Gardens High School is looking for people to join their homestay program. We host two regular study tours each year, and our next one will be from March 9-16, 2019. Students are from our sister school in Yokohama, and all participating homestays will receive a small reimbursement to cover living costs during their stay.

The Art Gallery of South Australia will host the 2018 World Tea Gathering this November as part of the OzAsia Festival. Tea artists from Australia, France, Japan, Brazil and Germany will assemble from the 2nd to 9th of November, presenting a week of pop-up events and performances celebrating the art of tea.

During the week-long gathering, members of the public are invited to discover pop-up tea performances at the Art Gallery of SA and select venues across the city. From large-scale, participatory performances, to unique one-on-one tea encounters, members of the public are invited to take part in contemporary tea practices.

Hiroko Kimura is a woman with an extraordinary and courageous spirit who has repeatedly "risen" beyond the limitations of her physical disability to produce beautiful art and poetry which embody her greater vision of "peace" among the people of the world.

Until Tuesday 16 October, her artworks will be on display in Hahndorf.

Spring is upon us and we'll be welcoming the season with a Spring Picnic on Sunday 14th October in Hazelwood Park. It's a bring-your-own food and drinks event and we'll be meeting near the playground from 12 noon. Everyone is welcome!

If coming by bus, alight at stop 13 on Greenhill Road and walk about 500m to the picnic spot.

The park has spacious grassed areas, BBQs, playground, duck pond, walking trails and toilets.

The David Roche Foundation will open a major new exhibition Edo Style: Art of Japan (1615-1868) which will showcase more than 150 exquisite works of art, drawn predominantly from the renowned Japanese art collection at the Art Gallery of South Australia, with additional items from The David Roche Collection and private collections.

AnimeGO! Anime Film Festival 2018

Adelaide's first and only anime film festival! Held annually, AnimeGO! is a showcase for aspiring animators, film makers and artists. The festival encourages creators to produce content with a Japanese influence, whether it be animation films (anime), artwork or music.


The festival's highlight will be the screening of the top entries from our film making competition, along with a mixture of five anime films. We will also be announcing the winner of our short anime film making competition with the prize being a TRIP TO JAPAN!

Commemorating the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Join Australian Red Cross to reflect on the tragic use of nuclear weapons in 1945 and take part in an activity to inspire their efforts to ensure they are never used again.

Drumming ensemble El Tambo Taiko, school students - including from the Adelaide Japanese Community School - together with others will share their talents, perspectives and insights. Hear about the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty adopted in 2017 and the road still ahead to see it take effect.
