JET ProgramThe application period closed for the 2010 Japan Exchange & Teaching (JET) Program on 1 December 2009.

The JET Program is administered by the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR) in cooperation with local government organisations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

There are two types of positions; an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) and a Coordinator of International Relations (CIR). Contracts for both types of position are a minimum of one year.

The program, now in its 22nd year, is aimed at promoting grass-roots international exchange between Japan and other nations. The number of countries sending participants has risen over the years, as has the number of participants. In 2009, the Programme has welcomed 4,682 participants from 38 countries.
